Why? Because on a normal Internet connection your transfer speed is decreased by:
* Handshaking negotiation procedures between you and the place you are transferring the file such as "slow start" described technically in RFC 2001.
* TCP overhead, error checking and sending of protocol header(e.g. Each IPv4 header is 160 bits, each UDP header is 64 bits, etc.)
Here's some common download and upload transfer times:
*A full DVD is usually 4.7 gigabytes. Over a 768 Kbps DSL line it would take 14 Hours 36 Minutes 8.61 Seconds and over a home 100 Mbps network the fastest it would ever go from computer-to-computer would be 7 Minutes 16.27 Seconds.
* Using the top 10 websites from Alexa in the United States including Google, Facebook, MySpace, eBay, YouTube, etc. I see the average number of requests on each home page is 19.3 and the average size of the home page is 243.1 Kilobytes and the average time it took to download the full home page of each web site (here at the T1 Shopper office on a 20 Mbps fiber link) was 1.254 seconds. On a 768 Kbps DSL line the 243.1 Kilobytes would theoretically take 2.59 seconds but since it's not a singe 243.1 Kilobyte file but instaed it's 243.1 Kilobytes in about 19.3 pieces - in our expreience, you'd need to add at least a 30% buffer to that.
* Song length varies quite a bit so the file size varies quite a bit. By eyeballing it, I'd guess the average song is 7 megabytes which on a 768 Kbps DSL line would take 1 minute 16.46 seconds or on a ~2 Mbps fiber or cable Internet service it would take 28.67 seconds. |
